Supervisor Michael J. Rubio
Supervisor Michael J. Rubio was born and raised in Kern County. On March 2, 2004, he was elected to represent the Fifth District in Kern County and became the youngest elected supervisor in California.
Since taking office on January 3, 2005, Supervisor Rubio has maintained a strong, hands-on approach to representation for his constituents. He continues to work to ensure that streets and roads in the Fifth District are safe and that those that are not receive adequate attention from the County. As the primary purveyor of health care for the underprivileged in the County, Supervisor Rubio seeks to bring greater accountability to Kern Medical Center and its management to ensure that patients receive the best possible care.
Supervisor Rubio serves as a member of:
  • Children and Families Commission
  • Criminal Justice Cabinet
  • Emergency Council
  • Joint City / County Standing Committee to Combat Gang Violence (Chairman)
  • Juvenile Justice Coordinating Council
  • Kern Council of Governments (Kern COG)
  • Kern County Museum Authority
  • Kern County Network for Children
  • Kern Medical Center (KMC) Foundation
  • San Joaquin Valley Regional Planning Agencies Policy Council (Chairman)
  • Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee
While working full-time, Rubio put himself through Bakersfield College and consequently studied Justice Administration at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. Recognized for his outstanding scholarship, Michael was selected to work for the Department of Justice under President Bill Clinton. He maintained high grades and continued his volunteer service on the East Coast, graduating with honors in Criminology.
Supervisor Rubio then returned to Kern County in order to give back to his community. He secured a job as an advocate for our youth and led an agency that provided health insurance to underprivileged children.
For the four years prior to his becoming Supervisor, Michael Rubio served Kern County on behalf of Senator Dean Florez. In Senator Florez's capitol office, Rubio spearheaded legislation on a variety of issues. He strongly supported efforts to better the quality of air in the Valley, opposing sludge coming into Kern County from Los Angeles and other surrounding areas, as well as finding new and innovative ways of helping the state meet the educational needs of Kern County's youth.
Within his first term in office, Supervisor Rubio has worked diligently to restore open government and integrity to County government, take drugs and gangs off the streets, and expanded access to government by constituents by implementing the first-ever Board of Supervisors night meetings throughout Kern County. He was also awarded the prestigious John F. Kennedy Jr. Leadership Award from the California Democratic Party and the German Marshall Memorial Fellowship from the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Recently, Supervisor Rubio received the 2007 KernCOG Regional Award of Merit - Distinguished Leadership / Elected Official.
Supervisor Rubio currently makes his home in East Bakersfield with his wife, Dora, their daughter, Iliana and their chocolate lab, Levi.
