Long Term Disability
|

Long Term Disability benefits are available to all benefit eligible County employees on a payroll deduction basis through UNUM Life. This is a group policy that is available to all employees at very competitive cost. Three different levels of coverage are available. Depending on the level selected, 50% of salary, 40% of salary or 25% of salary would be paid on a tax free basis while disabled,once a 90 day elimination (waiting) period passes. In general benefits will last until age 65. Benefits for pre-existing conditions will not be eligible for payments until participants have been covered under the plan for two years. Eligible employees must enroll promptly upon becoming eligible for this program or they will be considered a late entrant. Short Term Disability

Short-term disability and accident insurance policies may be purchased from American Bankers Life through payroll deduction. See Kern$Flex Plans section for further details.

State Disability Insurance
|
|
Most employees (notable exceptions are Deputy Sheriffs, Firefighters, and Management) are covered by State Disability Insurance. This program is administered by the State of California and provides for certain benefits during a doctor certified disability.

Return to Work Program
|
|
Statement of Policy. It is the policy of the County of Kern to provide employees who have suffered occupational injuries, which temporarily limit their ability to perform normal job duties, with temporary limited duty assignments.
It is also the policy of the County of Kern to provide reasonable accommodation to employees who are permanently incapacitated for the performance of their job duties (whether or not the disability is job caused) with modified or available alternate work which is within their medical restrictions and for which they are qualified.
