Members
Legal Authority: Established by Board of Supervisors Minute Order of March 27, 1972 as the Kern County Heritage Committee; name changed to American Revolution Bi-Centennial Committee by Board Minute Order of July 23, 1974; present designation as Kern County Heritage Commission approved by Board Minute Order of March 8, 1977; Minute Order of March 30, 1993, the Board transferred responsibility for staff support from General Services to Parks & Recreation.
Membership Qualifications: Ten members, with two members from each supervisorial district.
Term: To serve at the pleasure of the Board of Supervisors.
Duties: The Kern County Heritage Commission shall ring the Liberty Bell on Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Loyalty Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, California Admission Day, Veteran's Day and any event of special significance deemed appropriate by the Board of Supervisors and the Heritage Commission. The Commission shall secure interested organizations to conduct the ceremonies appropriate to the occasions with a member of the Commission or his designate to be present and responsible for ringing the bell.
Meeting Place and Time: Quarterly; 1st Wednesday of March, June, September, & December, in each of the supervisorial districts at 7:00 p.m.
Compensation: Members shall serve without compensation but necessary expenses for travel shall be allowed and paid.
Ethics Training: Pursuant to State law, on or after January 1, 2006, any person newly appointed shall successfully complete a course in ethics training approved by the Fair political Practices Commission and Attorney General. Each member is required to complete this training every two years.
