The District Attorney is a member of the executive branch of California government, provided for by Article XI, Section 1, of the California Constitution. The duties and functions of the District Attorney are set forth in Government Code section 16500 and following sections. The District Attorney is responsible for the prosecution of all criminal acts that occur in Kern County in violation of state laws and county ordinances.

The Kern County District Attorney's Office is divided into four main divisions, Administrative Services Division, the Bureau of Investigation, the Criminal Division, and the Forensic Science Division. Please refer to the web page for the respective divisions for additional information.
