In Memoriam: Stephen M. Tauzer

Stephen M. Tauzer, 58, Kern County Assistant District Attorney died unexpectedly on Friday, September 13, 2002, at his home in Bakersfield, CA.

Steve was born in Woodland, CA, where he graduated from Woodland High School before attending the University of San Francisco and receiving his Juris Doctorate at the University of California School of Law at Davis.

After working at the Public Defender's Office, Steve came to the Kern County District Attorney's Office in 1975. Since 1987, Steve has served as the Assistant District Attorney. Steve was known statewide as a leader in the prosecution field as well as child support enforcement and automation.

In May of 2002, he received the Kern County Bar Associations prestigious Bench and Bar Award for outstanding service in the legal field. He was the first prosecutor to receive the award in its 42-year history. His other numerous professional accolades include the Outstanding Service Award from the State of CA Department of Social Services, the California Family Support Directors Award, the Boy Scouts of America One Brick at a Time Award and many awards for his continuing service as advisor to the Kern County Grand Jury.

He was generous with both his time and resources, would help anyone in need, and constantly worked to better his community. District Attorney Ed Jagels remembered his colleague by stating "He was the ablest prosecutor I ever knew, and one of the nicest guys."
