Mission Statement:
Building Services is committed to providing essential custodial support to Kern County facilities and superior customer service to those individuals employed within the County facilities.
The Building Services operation is the "behind-the-scenes" strike team, providing custodial service and floor care to County facilities. County employees reap the benefits made available through Building Services by enjoying a clean and healthy environment. The Building Services component of the General Services Division of the County Administrative Office is responsible for providing daily custodial services utilizing a team concept, which makes the most efficient use of the work force. Most Building Services teams begin their day at 5 am while the rest of the community is still sleeping. By the time County employees report to work, Building Services has already spent hours cleaning their offices, dumping their trash and vacuuming their carpet. The teams of Building Services maintain the appearance of approximately 1.5 million square feet of County property, which include Libraries, Regional Centers, Sheriff's Stations, Health Clinics, Administrative Offices, and many more. The Building Services Workers invest early-morning hours addressing the basic cleaning needs of County facilities and spend the balance of their workday performing detail cleaning to enhance the appearance of the buildings. A strong emphasis on customer service is the mainstay of Building Services.
Building Services Manager, Kathryn Stobert, manages the operation and is responsible for a staff of 44 employees. The County is divided into two geographically-based Building Services areas as listed below, each containing a distribution of County facilities and Building Services Workers. Each area is overseen by one of the area supervisors entitled Senior Building Services Workers. These area supervisors closely monitor the functions of the Building Services staff within their area, which encourages quality performance and positive facility appearance. The efforts of the Senior Building Services Workers are supported by the Building Services Workers III who occupy the journeymen level position of the Building Services Worker flexible class.
Leadership meetings between management and the area supervisors focus on supervisory roles and principle-centered leadership. These meetings provide the opportunity for problem resolution and empowerment of the area supervisors.
The Building Services operation is also responsible for the selection, warehousing, and inventory control of all supplies and equipment needed to accomplish their goal of providing complete custodial services for County facilities.
