SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY WATER COALITION
On June 13, 2000, the Kern County Board of Supervisors (Board) approved the recommendation by Resource Management Agency Director David Price III for Kern County to join the San Joaquin Valley Water Coalition (Coalition). The information provided to the Board is contained in the June 13, 2000 Board letter.
The Coalition was initiated by the Great Valley Center, a private, non-profit organization concerned about the future of Californias Great Central Valley. It was intended that the counties comprising the San Joaquin Valley would join together in this new organization designed to provide representation to Valley interests regarding water resources. More information about the Coalition and its purpose can be found in the Coalition information handout.
The coalition will be governed by a Council comprised of 10 Discipline Caucus members from each member county. Potentially, the Council could have as many as 80 members. The day to day business of the Coalition is directed by a Board of directors, which consists of the Board of Supervisors' member from each county that has joined the Coalition. In addition, the President shall serve on the Board of Directors and is elected from the members of the Coalition Council. Currently, six San Joaquin Valley counties have joined the coalition - Fresno, Kern, Kings, Merced, Tulare, and Stanslaus.
Although all positions appointed by Kern County are currently filled, there is an informational handout called the Coalition Council Member duties that provides some background on the responsibilities of the Council members.
The October 3, 2000 Board letter designated several appointments and established a procedure by to obtain the remaining nominations. A November 7, 2000 Board letter submitted the remaining nominees for consideration by the Board. At that meeting, the Board of Supervisors acted to make the appointments as recommended by the Resource Management Agency. The Coalition began meeting in November 2000.
