Overview

Birth, marriage, and death certificates can be purchased by visiting the Hall of Records, mailing the request, or ordering online through VitalChek. California Health and Safety Code, § 103526, enacted to prevent identity theft, limits the availability of certified copies (unrestricted use) of birth, death or marriage records to specified individuals.

How to Order Certificates

FEE INCREASE EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2026

Effective January 1, 2026, the fees for obtaining Vital Records, including birth, death, and marriage certificates, will increase pursuant to Assembly Bill (AB) 64 (Chapter 662, Statutes of 2025). Applications received after December 31, 2025, will be subject to the new fees. Applications submitted with an incorrect payment amount will be returned.
