California law requires the County of Kern to provide and pay for medical treatment if an employee sustains an injury or illness arising out of and in the course of employment. The County has chosen to provide this medical care by using a Workers’ Compensation Physician Network called a Medical Provider Network (MPN), as provided by Senate Bill 899. The program's goal is to provide the highest quality, most effective medical treatment available, making possible a rapid recovery, enabling the injured employee to return to the workplace in a productive role.

The Medical Provider Network (MPN) is a group of health care providers (physicians and other types of providers) set up by an insurer or self-insured employer and approved by the Division of Workers’ Compensation’s Administrative Director to treat workers injured on the job. MPNs must meet access to care standards for common occupational injuries and work-related illnesses. Further, the regulations require MPN providers to use medical treatment guidelines adopted by the Department of Workers’ Compensation.

The MPN also includes ancillary service providers, such as hospitals, surgical centers, therapists, laboratories, DME suppliers and pharmacies. These ancillary service providers are located within geographic proximity of primary care physicians and specialists.

Kern County's MPN has been approved by the State Department of Workers’ Compensation and is administered by Kern County’s Workers’ Compensation Services, a program of the Risk Management division of the Office of County Counsel. The County's MPN includes a mix of doctors specializing in work-related injuries and doctors with expertise in general areas of medicine.

Employees may pre-designate their primary care physician to be their primary treating physician, whether or not that physician is in the Medical Provider Network, provided that the pre-designation was made in writing, prior to the occurrence of the workplace injury. This pre-designated physician must be a physician who has treated the employee in the past and/or maintains the employee's medical records.

Medical Provider Network (MPN)

In accordance with title 8 California Code of Regulations section 9767.1(a)(25) the listing as provided is a regional area listing as it provides for a listing of all MPN providers in the county where the employee works, and the employer or insurer cannot produce a provider listing based on mile radius.

These MPN listings are updated, at a minimum, on a quarterly basis. The information on this MPN website is subject to change without notice. Any inaccuracies reported with the MPN listing will be updated within the regulatory mandated timeframes.
